A Study Of The Images Of Campus Intellectuals In David Lodge's Novels

David Lodge is one of the most excellent contemporary campus literary fiction writers in Britain. He has created a series of intellectual novels by virtue of his keen insight into west situation. Been different from the traditional novels, Lodge shaped a group of intellectuals under the system of contemporary college campus. It is a more professional group that has its own characteristics of the times in their own living environment, behavior and living habits. From the view of Lodge, it seems a pity that contemporary intellectuals have been reshaped by college life, this kind of remodeling even includes the disarmament of their mental state and self-imposed exile. This paper will combine the related theory of western intellectuals and the concept of writer to research the problem of contemporary campus intellectual mental decline in Lodge's"campus trilogy"by the way of spiritual anatomy .This paper has three parts that consists of the introduction, body, and conclusion. The body is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is began from the"intellectual"etymology .Textual that combining academic theories of intellectuals to open the group memory of"spiritual hero"of traditional intellectuals in the western historical context , and then back to present, explore the hot subject of"intellectuals disappeared"since the middle of 20th century in academic circle to indicate that the variations in the status and spiritual attitude of the campus intellectuals who have incorporated by system has caused the attention of novelist Lodge, and that became an important theme of his creative and ideological landscape. The second and three chapters focus on the"Change Place"and"Small World"to reveal the process of"spiritual hero"sink into"lost survivor"and then turn into"crazy secular followers"by analysis the campus intellectuals, especially elaborate the problem that the absence of the elite consciousness after campus intellectuals back into private life, and the barren spirit world after indulging in the secular joy to demonstrate the situation that the implication of historical value of campus intellectuals has been thoroughly digested, they have degenerated into a group that has lose critical consciousness and ideals. Finally, the fourth chapter explores the ideal type of intellectuals through the campus intellectual image of Bin Lou shaped by Lodge who tend to have a positive value of the campus intellectuals. She steps out of the ivory tower into the public, and becomes a"strong public person"who has both social mission and humanities, it also brings the dawn of spirit reversion of intellectuals because of her"sense of exile"and"amateur spirit". This subject of the image about campus intellectuals in Lodge's campus novel mainly researches through the thinking of the career, status and inner spirit of contemporary intellectuals, and it means to explore the critical and transcendent spirit of intellectuals, then we have an conclusion that as long as this spirit being , the intellectuals will be eternal.
