| From the perspective of Conceptual Integration Theory, with the corpus of English sportsnews, this research studied the textual metonymy of nominal indirect anaphora. It is testifiedthat textual metonymy has strong explanatory power on nominal indirect anaphora; thecognitive mechanism and constraint factors of nominal indirect anaphora are interpreted; andthe reason of the textual distribution is explained. Concerning the insufficiency of currentstudies about indirect anaphora, this thesis aimed to expand the theoretical approach forrelevant studies.It is proved in this research that nominal indirect anaphora has space optimization function,interpersonal function, cohesive and coherence functions, as well as rhetorical function. Itscognitive mechanism is constrained by semantic, pragmatic and personal factors, and couldbe well interpreted by the four-space integration model of Conceptual Integration Theory, inwhich textual metonymy plays a crucial part. It is enlightened that to select proper tactic oftextual encoding and decoding, an over-all point of view should be taken; the cognitive,pragmatic and emotional conditions of both sides of the communication should be consideredcomprehensively, thus achieving effective communication. |
