The usage of deception is a complicate communicative behavior. Studies of deception have been carried out by many scholars from different perspectives such as philosophy, psychology, sociology, rhetoric and linguistics. However, the previous studies of deception are mainly static which can only partially explain the mechanism and process of deception, as well as lack of complete and systematical support of theories. Therefore, on the basis of ICM and RT, this thesis tends to propose the RICM model to dynamically analyze the generation and interpretation mechanism of deception in A Dream of Red Mansions (first 80 chapters) from the perspective of cognitive pragmatics. The pragmatic effects of deception are also discussed in this thesis. This thesis consists of five chapters:Chapter One serves as a general introduction to the study, including the rationale, objectives, research methodology and layout of this thesis.Chapter Two presents the literature review of related studies of deception from the perspectives of philosophy, psychology, sociology, rhetoric and linguistics. Efforts especially go to the discussion of the gaps found in the previous researches.Chapter Three, based on the limitation of the previous studies, proposes RICM model, intending to fill the gaps of previous studies.Chapter Four concerns data description, analysis and discussion. Firstly, data description is presented; secondly, generation and interpretation mechanism of deception in A Dream of Red Mansions is comprehensively analyzed. The pragmatic effects are also discussed in this chapter.Chapter Five draws a conclusion and lists the contributions of the thesis as follows:1. Proposing the RICM analytical model based on ICM and RT and applying it as the theoretical framework to the analysis and discussion of the generation and interpretation mechanism of deception in A Dream of Red Mansions.2. Discussing the pragmatic effects of deception in detail. This chapter also points out limitations of the thesis and proposes suggestions for the further research.
