On The Aesthetic Characteristics And Space Of The Early Mosque(610-1100)

The mosque is one of the outstanding representatives of islamic architecture. It played an important role in the islamic world. Its functions involved politics, economy, education, culture, etc. The early mosque showed not only the construction technology, but also the levels of politics and economy at that time. Its contained Arab's customs and aesthetic standard, too.With the early mosque as object of research, this thesis made a systemic study on aesthetic characteristics and space by relevant theory. And the whole thesis was composed of the following parts:The introduction part discussed the significance of choosing this topic, current situation of the research at home and abroad, research characteristic and explication of relevant concepts.The first part reviewed the origin of the early mosque in terms of etymology, history and architecture.The second part summarized some aesthetic characteristics of the early mosque, including practical beauty, harmonious beauty and sublime beauty.The third part analyzed the factors, which caused the formation of the Early mosque's aesthetic characteristics, such as historical heritage, national geographic, religious culture, and peripheral nationalities. Undoubedtly, the establishment of the early mosques benefited from the levels of politics and economy just at that time. They were important factors, but less effected aesthetic characteristics. Therefore, in addition to the above key factors, political and economic factors were not elaborated in this thesis.Space was the vehicle of aesthetic characteristics -- sublime beauty. It also contained inner feeling of destiny and time. As a result, The fourth part reorganized the evolution of space, and discussed that the different sequence of space reflected different cultural connotations.The fifth part discussed evolution and intension of space of the early mosque and analysed individual cases by graphic and landscape.Ultimately, the conclusion part summarized aesthetic characteristics and space connotation of the early mosque as a whole. It elaborated that space which contained life experiences, was the vehicle of aesthetic characteristics. The changes of early mosque space not only presented the connotations of constructing changes, but also deeper reflected the politico-religious relationship,which transited from theocracy to separation.
