Robert Penn Warren's masterpiece All the King's Men (1946) contains profound spatial connotations, yet they have remained for the most part unexplored. Consequently, with the method of close reading and on the basis of previous studies, the present thesis attempts to interpret Warren's spatial consciousness in All the King's Men from spatial perspective, which will add a significant apprehension to the interrelationship among the various spaces in this novel.Through an in-depth analysis of the topographic spaces in All the King's Men, the present thesis initially explores the representational forms of Warren's spatial awareness, which refers to Warren's osmotic theory or osmosis of being. Besides, by examining the narrative strategies that Warren has employed in All the King's Men, the present thesis expounds the manifestations of Warren's spatial awareness at the chronotopic level. Finally, the exploration of spiritual spaces for three characters in All the King's Men also reflects Warren's spatial consciousness.Based upon the above analyses, the thesis concludes that All the King's Men reflects implicitly Warren's spatial consciousness for both individuals and American South. Furthermore, by interpreting All the King's Men from spatial perspective, the present thesis will shed a new light for analyzing other literary works.
