Traditional techniques and materials of oil painting is a result created in the peak of western painting development history, and have a profound influence in the modern and contemporary painting creation and study. The problem of Modern and contemporary oil painting is an emphasized on the aesthetic of social attributes and the conceptual of art works' but an ignores the study on the techniques and materials of canvas itself. So, the research of skills and materials of traditional oil painting has an important significance for the theoretical and practical.This article is to discuss the application and the development of traditional techniques and materials, in the background of contemporary painting language, and with the beginning of illustrating the aesthetic quality of the traditional painting's materials and technology.This paper's first chapter discussed oil painting from three aspects the most widely praised by people:The beauty of its material, the beauty of its technical production and the convey of spiritual strength. The second chapter divided the painters of modern and contemporary into three categories:first of all, the person using traditional materials or classical techniques to express the modern spirit. Secondly, the person using modern materials, and have an innovation in the use and skills of material. Last but not least, the person who has a traditional aesthetic and a plot with classical or traditional. And select some Chinese contemporary strength delegate painters--GuoRunwen, LengJun, LiuKongxi, YangFeiyun, ChaoGe,to to make an in-depth discussion. And then look how these artists find a correspondence between their works and the search of traditional process at present, this part is also the key of this thesis. Chapter 3 is a conclusion with the thinking about traditional paintings in the creation of contemporary painting.Oil painting has its unique aesthetic feeling, this special aesthetic feeling can not be replaced by any other type and material, and is the most important value of it, we can get everything what we want from tradition--the pure language of oil painting, and the painting feeling of canvas. So, it has a great practical significance for the modern painter to reference the traditional painting. Someone said that the traditional classical painting is outdated, but we have measures:from the aspect of the skill, it has formed a set of mature standards, which our people can reference, and from the aspect of the aesthetic, the pursuits for the spirits of ideal beauty, harmony, and rational will never gone. Moreover, in this fast-paced time, it can satisfy people's spiritual needs, and then meet people's aesthetic taste.Due to the difference in the factors of regional and historical, and the difference of the painter's personal temperament, every painter has a distinctive in the overall realistic style, The materials, techniques and some regular knowledge of the canva can be see as a historical precipitation formed in the development of canvas's history, and be worth for every people engaged in oil painting to do a devotedly research. The contemporary painter use the classical techniques for reference, and then performing the feelings of the modern person with the contemporary life feelings and conception,Because of the difference in personal taste and expressional ability, their realistic style is not same, but the same is they all draw nutrition from traditional painting, and choose their own interested point to absorb. So they can use the old method in the modern time, and have an innovation with inherit it.Traditional painting is our precious wealth, only based on it, can we find the direction of our innovation. Therefore, the traditional painting still blooming new splendor in the present, its value is unequivocal.
