The history of the Southern Ming, illustrates this period that the residual forces established regimes in south China after the downfall of the Ming dynasty (The Beijing government) in 1644. Because of the political sensitivity about the Southern Ming writings, the Qing dynasty did take measures to alter and expunge historical writings about the Southern Ming. This situation has not changed until the Republic. Enthusiasm for resurrecting the Southern Ming studies furtherly increased in the period of Anti-Japanese War. The studies mainly consist of three parts:first, higher criticism, centering on the literature's collection, comparison, and recension of problematical old texts. This was represented by Zhu Xizu, Liu Yazi, Xie Guozhen, Zhu Yinlong. Second, a historical discussion, with an explaination of the Southern Ming events to inspire nationalistic feelings to resist against the Japanese, or explain the political views with a historical analogy to the Southern Ming. Third, with a systematic summary of the existed academic achievements on Southern Ming study, then builds a truly veritable Southern Ming record on the basis of the former. For example, Qian Haiyue's The Southern Ming. This paper tries to review the studies of the Southern Ming from multi-aspects, and explore its gains and losses by clearing the related materials, furtherly reveals the rise, process and characteristic of the historical trend with relative integrity, and finally makes a contribution to enriching connotation of the research on the history of China modern historiography.
