The novel and drama are pretty different as to the respective artistic expressions and specialties for a long time, therefore, Chinese can witness the general circumstances of inter-closure between modern and contemporary novel world and theater circle. As a matter of fact, Chinese modern drama is linked with literature (novel in particular) as closely as flesh and blood since the day it was born. However, novel and drama always keep each other at an arm's length in the centennial history of Chinese modern drama.This paper selects the novel A Song of Everlasting Sorrow by Wang Anyi and Gold Lock by Zhang Ailing as the case study. The former is the original novel written by Wang Anyi and adapted as the drama by Zhao Yaoming, a playwright from Shanghai. The latter is one of the masterpieces of Zhang Ailing and adapted by the novelist Wang Anyi as the drama.Which have become the respective inter-textual works in the mutual process。Accordingly, the case study of Wang Anyi, A Song of Everlasting Sorrow and Gold Lock can facilitate to probe into the hidden relations between the novel narration and the stage performance. It can further delve into the switching principles of creation behind the inter-textual relations between the novel and the drama. And this paper tries to obtain the cogency by touching upon the deeper and broader relating cultural meanings. |
