Mental Health, Social Support And Coping Styles Of Postgraduates In Chongqing

Objective To investigate the status and the influencing factors of the mental health of postgraduates in Chongqing, and to explore the relationship with their social support and coping styles. Considering the mental health problem of postgraduates to propose the Efficient adjustment and dredge of strategies and provide scientific theory foundation to explore psychological educational pattern.Method The study takes method which combines the quantitative investigation and qualitative investigation. According to the nonprobability sampling, in-depth interviews and key individuals interviews were conducted among 18 postgraduates,10 professionals and 2 key individuals in qualitative investigation;According to the Multiple stratified chester sampling method,During October to December in 2009,1130 postgraduates were investigated by symptom checklist-90,Trait Coping Style Questionnaire(TCSQ),Social-Support Questionnaire(SSRS) and a self-developed questionnaire anonymously. the data of qualitative investigation were analyzed by MAXqda and the data of quantitative investigation were input and analyzed with Epidata and Spss11.5 separately. The surveyors had professional training. The study had application from the Medical Ethics Committees of Chongqing Medical University.Results 1.The results of qualitative research indicated that the postgraduates in Chongqing felt good about mental health status themselves. The main influencing factor of mental health of postgraduates were descendiblity ,personality, growth environment,quality of life,social support and coping styles .2.The reliability and validity analysis of SCL-90 Scale indicated that Cronbach's a coefficient and Split-half coefficient both were higher than 0.7.the correlation coefficient between factor and factor was from 0.758 to 0.921;the 10 factors average score and total score of SCL-90 were significantly different from the normal psychology students and abnormal psychology studengs.3.The check out positive numbers are 410 and Positive rate is 36.3%,the number of nomal psychology are 720 and positive rate is 63.7%.Except for the factors of Somatization and Compulsion,other factors scores of SCL-90 in postgraduates in Chongqing were significantly higher than those in postgraduates in western region (P<0.05). the mental health condition of postgraduates in Chongqing was better than the the postgraduates in Henan and Jiangxi ,and that was worse than he postgraduates in Shanghai(P<0.05);postgraduates in Chongqing got the higher scores in each factors of SCL-90 than undergraduates mold(P<0.05), the mental health condition of second year postgraduates was worse than the first year postgraduates(P<0.05);the mental health condition of the medical postgraduates was better than the postgraduates in the engineering,the arts and the comprehensive college ( P<0.05 ) .Multi-factors of logistic regression analysis indicated the impotant influencing factor of mental health were rearing patterns,study pressures,relationship with instructor,character and sleep status.4.There is related between mental health ,coping style and social support(P<0.05).positive coping styles was negativly correlated with the total average scores and each factor of the SCL-90,negative coping styles were positively correlated with the total average scores and each factor of the SCL-90(P<0.05);Objective support, subjective support,availability of support and the who1e social support were negativly correlated with the total average scores and each factor of the SCL -90(P<0.05),The total scores of SCL-90 as depend variable,scores of two factors of coping styles and three factors of social support as independent variables in step by regress analyse,the results indicated that active copying style,negative copying style,social support get into regress equation.The explain variety rate is 33.1%-41.1%.5.social support and coping style direetly influence the mental health.social support also indireetly predicts mental health by coping style.Conclusion 1. SCL-90 has good reliability and validity using in postgraduates in Chongqing. 2.The mental health status of postgraduates in Chongqing was not optimistic,the mental health of postgraduates,coping style,social support had significant relationship.more social support and active coping styles benefits the mental health of postgraduates. 3.The departments should attaches high attention to the mental health status of the postgraduates,to build a psychological educational pattern for postgraduates from the aspects of the coping style,social support and the instructor.
