Abstract/Summary:
As a form of tourist publicities, Xinjiang C-E tourist brochures are designed to convey information and introduce local cultures to the potential tourists from abroad, providing a channel for tourists to obtain correct and objective knowledge about Xinjiang. However, there are many problems in the current Xinjiang C-E tourist brochures showed in the survey conducted by the author. For the reason that tourist brochures are flooded with countless cultural misunderstandings, mistranslations as well as poor translations, it is difficult for foreign tourists to get useful information. The quality of Xinjiang C-E tourist brochures will affect the number of tourists form abroad to Xinjiang. Meanwhile, it will also have influence on the image of Xinjiang in the international tourist markets. In this case, it is pressing to improve the quality of Xinjiang C-E tourist brochure as soon as possible.Based on the constructive translation theory and its translation principles proposed by Professor Lv Jun and the analysis on specific examples from bilingual (Chinese and English) tourist brochures in Xinjiang, this thesis attempts to construct a C-E tourist brochure that can cater to the style of target (English) readers and highlight unique features of Xinjiang at the same time.In the introduction, this thesis illustrates the background, the purpose and the significance of this study. Current situation of C-E tourist brochures and translation problems in the tourist brochures are introduced here. The purpose of this thesis is also explicit in this part: constructing Xinjiang C-E tourist brochures under the guidance of constructivist translation theory and its principles. Chapter one is general introduction of Xinjiang tourism industry and its future. In addition, the author presents the current studies relating to Xinjiang C-E tourist brochures in this chapter as well. Chapter two explains in detail the definition of tourist brochures and its importance to tourism industry. The difficulties in translation of tourist brochures are analyzed in this chapter. Chapter three summarizes the linguistic and cultural errors found in Xinjiang C-E tourist brochures through the analysis of specific examples. Through a general retrospection of three translation paradigms in China as well as their translation principles and the contributions and limitations, chapter four demonstrates the details of constructivist translation theory: its philosophical foundation, rational ground, linguistic basis and theory of truth. This chapter also highlights the minimum translation principles of constructive theory. Under the guidance of the constructivist theory, the fifth chapter aims to construct Xinjiang C-E tourist brochures both in macroscopic view (the translation of the overall framework of the brochure) and in microscopic view (the translation of specific content in the brochure). The last part is the general conclusion of the whole thesis, pointing out that constructivist translation theory is a better theory to instruct the translation of tourist brochures. Furthermore, the problems and limitations in this study have been stated in this part.
