Study On Jia Pingwa's Saga Novel

Jia Pingwa is one of the most important contemporary writers. In the process of reading carefully every novel which Jia creates, the author found that in recent three decades, Jia Pingwa has never stopped thinking about the proposition after he clearly put forward the "People's Reform" in his work "Turbulence".Jia Pingwa's so-called "People's Reform" really originated from scholars of the past who lived-in the period of " May 4th Movement " for the exploration of "Remolding National Character". In this paper, the author reviews briefly the proposition of "Remolding National Character" which modern and contemporary writers thought about, leading to the new exploration that Jia Pingwa probes into in the new historical conditions. Jia Pingwa found the new generation of rural youth who generally makes widely known the "Subjective Spirit", and noted that because of being unable to shake off the fetters, they have some significant shortcomings. They inevitably fall into the trap of the old order in fighting against the old. In many of his works, Jia Pingwa mercilessly revealed their own inherent weaknesses, difficulties and troubles faced by Chinese peasants and intellectuals.In this paper, the author summarized from the above three aspects, trying to answer the question:"Why do people need reform?". Jia Pingwa recognizes that remolding culture is to realize the means of "People's Reform". He loves the traditional culture, and shows sentimentally a deep affection. He is also keenly aware of the drawbacks of traditional culture and hopes to remold traditional culture. The third part of this paper is the discussion of this issue, intended to explain "How to remold" problem. "Other Discussion" section discusses briefly "What is the goal of reform of people?" Finally, The author made some assessments of Jia's thinking about "People's Reform".In short, following the tradition of "May 4th Movement", Jia Pingwa tries his own exploration about the proposition "People's Reform" in the form of novel. Although the exploration is just an attempt and it is impossible to find a convincing solution, his exploration will undoubtedly provide many useful lessons for our advancement. during the Chinese nation's long journey to the Modernization, Recognizing this, It may not be unhelpful to choose of the road for the future. Perhaps, this is practical significance that Jia Pingwa's novel shows in the "People's Reform" aspects.
