The Heroic Offspring written by Wen Kang of Qing Dynasty, is a chivalrous and romantic novel featured with dialects,slang and sayings. Particularly, many colloquial expressions in this novel will be analyzed and the their historical evolution and development will be explored.Firstly, from the literature, ethnology, linguistics point of view,research done by former scholars are summarized to expound the value of this study on colloquialisms of The Heroic Offspring.Secondly, colloquialisms will be clearly defined so as to give a general analysis of colloquialism in The Heroic Offspring. Based on theories, this thesis will staticly illustrate colloquialisms,from four aspects including the part of speech, syllable structure, semantics, word group respectively.Then, standardized by Chinese Dictionary, the meanings of colloquialisms which have not discussed before in The Heroic Offspring will be sorted out and explained.Finally, the development of colloquialisms in The Heroic Offspring will be summarized,from which people can discover that some of colloquialisms are passed on while other are newly found. Compared with general words,colloquialisms show three main characteristics encompassing coinages of new words, gradual vanishing of old words and the evolution of meanings of words.
