It is the most intense periods of competition that the United States and Japan scrambled for the Far East Pacific regions during this decadefrom The"9·18 Incident" launched by Japan to aggress China in 1931 to the outbreak of the Pacific War triggered by the Pearl Harbor Incident which Japanese sneak attacked in 1941. Both of America's "open door"policy and Japan's "mainland policy" aimed at China as the main object. In addition, the Southeast Asia region, especially Vietnam, Singapore and Dutch East Indies became the Japan-US game contest fields for the unique strategic positions and abundant natural resources as well. The United States constantly changed it's policies against Japan from compromise, appeasement,to moderate containment, protest, until the tough sanctions along with the invasion pace deepened by Japan during these periods. The aim to adopt these policies was that the United States attempted to avoid or postpone involved in war against Japan for maintaining its interests in the Far East Pacific regions with minimum costs. Consequently, there is a possibility to reach a compromise with Japan at the expense of the interests of China all the way existing in the evolution process of U.S. policy against Japan. The Pacific War, however, ultimately broke out due to the irreconcilable contradictions between the U.S. and Japan and the deepening aggression of Japan on the incompatible roads. The thesis made a comb and inducted on the evolution of U.S.policy toward Japan to contribute us to comprehend the relationship constraints among the U.S.,China and Japan at that time and the US-Japan strategic policy in the Far East and their respective roles. The biggest starting point of both the U.S.and Japan is to search for their own interests, but China as a have-nots was likely to be sacrificed at that time. From historical experiences and lessons, we got the answer that a country must mainly depend on its own actual strengths, rather than anchoring its hope on other countries on the international arena.Meanwhile, historical experiences and lessons made us aware that served as today's important world economy and political powers, the US-Japan relationship is still affecting the Asia-Pacific regions, and even the developments and changes of international relation in the world. Analyzing the relationship between the U.S. and Japan, the evolution of U.S. policy towards Japan and understanding interests intersection of the U.S., China and Japan are the indispensable elements in developing self-reliance and realizing national rejuvenation in the new situation.
