Character teaching is a very important part of Chinese teaching. And the efficiency of Character teaching influences the results of Chinese teaching directly. This thesis takes African students as investigative objects, in order to investigate and research their Chinese character mistakes.The first part of this thesis introduces the reason why the writer chose this theme, tells the method of research and theoretical basis, etc. This part also refers to the condition of Chinese character teaching for overseas students. Then, it points out that, at present, Chinese language education for overseas students has shortage in the research of African students.The second part counts and analyzes about 1000 mistakes which were from 51 African students. On the principle of commonness and individuality, those mistakes are divided into 6 types. Those 6 types are the mistakes of character strokes, the mistakes of assembly changing, the mistakes of assembly increasing and reducing, the mistakes of assembly transmuting and displacing, the mistakes of structure, the mistakes of homophones. And the mistakes of assembly changing are separated into 4 subordinate types, which are isomorphic assembly changing, synonymous assembly changing, apperceptive changing and phonetic assembly changing. This part also explains all the types of mistakes. Then, the writer shows the quantity of different types, the rate of those types and the scores of students. And it figures out the high-frequency mistakes of African students, analyzes their specialties, compares differs of those mistakes comprehensively.The third part analyzes the reasons of mistakes, which bases on the type and distribution. Analysis results find that those reason of mistakes are negative transfer of mother language; grapheme, pronunciation and acceptation cannot be connected correctly; the influence of writing skill and contexts. It also probes the influences of character itself, teacher's professional capability and students themselves. And the last part presents some teaching methods, in order to improve current Chinese character teaching situation. This part discusses a principal which is named "stoke-assembly-character teaching". And then, it brings forward some teaching methods on importance of phonogram, usage of multi-media, and hand writing training, etc.
