| Buddhist Culture is an important part of Chinese Culture. The visual symbols of Buddhist Culture is gradually evolved in the spread of Buddhist Culture in Han regions with continuous changes and development, absorption and fusion. These visual symbols are endowed with Buddhist teachings,symbolism of Buddhism and the cultural characteristics of Han. This paper aims to analyze the evolution of these visual symbols from the interdisciplinary perspective of the Religion and Design, using related methods of Image science, Communication and Artistic Style. Firstly, the study briefly discusses the symbolic characteristics of Han Buddhist Symbolism in the spread process from the symbolic, empty and normative aspects. Secondly, the paper makes a tentative exploration of the development of these visual symbols. This paper gives an overall induction and summary from four different aspects, such as the heritage and advocation in the early period of Buddhist culture, the Faith and Speculation in the Wei, Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties, the Heaven and world at the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties, the conception and pattern after Song Dynasty. Based on the summary, four major visual symbols -Buddha,Nimbus,Lotus,Flying Apsaras are selected to analyze their symbolic significance and evolution of shape and style. The study interprets the origin, shape, style of visual symbols of Buddhist Culture, and their changes influenced by politics, history, culture, philosophy and art from various angles and dimensions. This paper clarifies how the visual symbols of Buddhism appear and form today's style, and provides the symbolic meanings of visual symbols of Buddhism. The study gives useful information about the evolution of visual symbols of Buddhist Culture in Han regions and provides a greater level of understanding on modern Buddhist art and traditional patterns,and also provides the use visual design elements and visual expression on the contemporary design. |
