With the rapid development of the city, our life and living environment is becoming more and more complex and diverse. The unknown circumstances and information are continuously increasing, which bring not just much convenience but also great cognitive confusions of the city's environment and space, especially the commercial environment. The commercial environment is the center of a city, and closely related to people's life, which is the reflection of a city's economy and culture. The commercial environment of a modern city is all-inclusive and complex, and its scale is increasingly greater. In order to plan and neaten the disordered environment, we introduce the design of visual identity. The design of visual identity in the commercial environment is the most vivid and most visual one in numerous visual identity systems. Nowadays, the design of visual identity in the commercial environment is not paid enough attention in Harbin, and still stayed at the stage that the commercial signs and visual identities are relatively separated, lacking of a complete design and reflection. Therefore, the research on the design of visual identity and sign system is urgently needed to promote the current situation of the commercial visual environment in Harbin. This research is of great theoretical and practical importance.This article consists of five parts. With the background of commercial environment, by comparison on designing of visual identity between China and foreign countries, it deduces that though the design of visual identity in China is much behind that in Western countries, it is becoming a separate new subject, and is getting more and more attentions from numerous designers and the society. By identifying concepts, features, functions and classifications of the design of visual identity in the commercial environment, the author deduces theoretical methods fitting for the design of visual identity in the commercial environment, which fills parts of the blank in theoretical research on such aspect. With new angle of view, basing on Harbin's unique regional cultures, this article analyzes the status of Harbin's commercial environment, relation between the design of visual identity and Harbin's commercial environment, the necessity and importance of the design of visual identity in the commercial environment. Not only, this article stresses four problems in the design of visual identity in Harbin's commercial environment, which need to be resolved timely, but also, it gives solutions respectively. Analyzing and comparing factors of designs in different ages with specific regional cultures, this article summarizes designing characters of the design of visual identity in Harbin's commercial environment, and abstracts designing principles of the design of visual identity in the commercial environment.This article points out the problems of the design of visual identity in commercial areas of Harbin, such as vague indications, inaccurate information, and the unsystematic planning and design of sculpture, material, content and color. And this article considers the design of visual identity as a part of the whole commercial environment, studies the methods of its design and setting, and explores some feasible schemes. And it puts forward designing proposals of visual identity and signs in commercial surroundings, which systematically designs indicator drops, ground plans of buildings, and ground directions systems. Furthermore, the article provides feasible solutions to the design of visual identity in modern commercial environment in this region.
