"Practice for sufficient degree" is the teaching idea of the higher vocational English teaching reformation. The purpose of English teaching is to cultivate the students'ability to use the language, which highlights the English teaching practicability and combines the language learning and the actual communication competence. In this way, we can cultivate the real language talents. But now the higher vocational English teaching still has accepted the teaching method which is based on the theory of structuralism. It emphasizes the cognition of the structure. More attention has been paid to vocabulary, grammatical rules, while the target language culture background knowledge is ignored. As a result, the students don't understand the cultural differences between China and Western countries, resulting in the cultural shock. Therefore, according to the characteristics of higher vocational English teaching, through questionnaires and interview, this paper surveys the present situation of building the students'cultural awareness and explores the ways of cultural awareness training in the higher vocational English teaching to provide data and advice for the higher vocational English teaching practice.This paper consists of five parts:The first part is the introduction. It elaborates the basic requirements and the present situation of the higher vocational English teaching, clarifies the significance of this research, defines some related concepts and introduces the structure and research methods of this paper.The second part explores the theoretical basis and the research situation home and abroad. It introduces the relationship between language and culture, culture and cultural teaching and expounds the research situation.The third part is the core of this paper. The author investigates 250 students and 31 teachers about the present situation of building the students'cultural awareness in the higher vocational English teaching, through questionnaires and interviews.The fourth part is the analysis of the research results. This part analyzes four factors that influence cultural teaching:the teaching syllabus, the teachers, the students and the test.The fifth part presents the research conclusions and suggestions. This part draws conclusions according to the data analysis of investigation and offers the systematic and effective suggestions in the teaching materials, the teachers, the students and the test.
