The Research On The Development Of School-based Materials For Oral English In Secretary Major

As a communication tool, English is very important in the 21st century. Oral English ability is one of the most basic language skills. After training for three or four years, the vocational school students come upon the stage. Shanghai is a large city which has so many overseas-funded enterprises. A great number of inter-disciplinary talents and technicians are needed. The stuff must communicate with some foreign customers and read some catalogues of equipments in English. Therefore, to be a skilled practitioner, the students must learn oral English very well. The paper combined the theory of vocational education and curriculum development, developed school-based materials for oral English in secretary major. It can be divided into the following sections:Chapter 1:Introduction:First of all, I explored the background and significance of the research on the Teaching Materials Development. And then, I can reveiw the development of school-based materials in theory and practice. Finally, I proposed the research ideas and methods based on the theory of vocational education.ChapterⅡ:Raise the question:By means of materials connection and questionnaire, this paper makes a research and analysis on the present situation of English teaching in Shanghai vocational school. And then I narrated the necessity and importance of developing oral English school-based materials in Shanghai vocational schools.ChapterⅢ:The connotation and basic function of school-based curriculum and materials were compared. The present situation of developing school-based materials in our country was analyzed in two sides:the organizer and the contents. The problems were found out.ChapterⅣ:Combined the characteristics of vocational education and the theory of developing teaching materials, some cautions must be given:employment as orientation, practicality, a pointed development, flexibility, creativity, great attention to students' individuality and comprehensive quality. In this chapter, procedures of developing school-based materials for oral English had to be followed.Chapter V:The case of developing school-based materials for oral English in secretary major——SXG. At first, the application of the old oral English materials for secretary major was to be introduced. Survey report on industry needs of secretaries in Shanghai and surrounding areas was made. I surveyed the needs of the students who had graduated from secretary major in SXG in 2006 by questionnaire. And then, post ability, teaching aim, and teaching program were established.
