A Study On Zhang Ailing's Translation Activties

In the early 1990s, many of China's greatest writers have devoted time to translation, making a major impact on the development of native literary traditions. These author-translators deserve a place in the history of twentieth-century foreign literary translation in China. However, their role of translators has hardly been recognized. Notably, Zhang Ailing was just one of them. With countless research conducted on her writings, research on her translations could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Few people know her translation works. This is in sharp contrast to her achievements and contribution to the translated Chinese American literature. This thesis attempts to focus on her translation activities, exploring why she translates, what she translates, and how she translates, as well as the links between her translation work and her own writing.The thesis consists of four chapters. The preface presents the author's motivation, research background, adopted methodologies and a brief introduction to the thesis. Chapter I begins with the special life experience of Zhang Ailing and explores the links between her writings and translations. Chapter II focuses on analyzing her translation works. Chapter III seeks to assess her contributions and achievements as a translator.
