Researchers have already done many contributions in the field of foreign language teaching. However, vocabulary plays an important role in the second vocabulary acquisition. To some extent, second vocabulary acquisition is a cognitive process. Many researchers, such as Rod Ellis, Rubin, have realized the importance of vocabulary acquisition and have changed to study vocabulary from different cognitive language perspective. With the research of cognitive linguistics for decades, Iconicity has become an important factor of linguistic signs in the field of cognitive language research, which compare with arbitrariness. Iconicity defines that there is a non-arbitrary relationship between the signifier and the signified of the language sign. In addition, it is more successful to apply this iconicity theory to describe some language phenomena, because an inner relationship is existed among the language phenomena and human mind. At the same time, iconicity can be used in the different aspects of language, such as in syntax and text aspects. However, the thesis will focus on the study of the second vocabulary based on the iconicity theory in order to help to enrich the research of second vocabulary learning. The subjects are 100 sophomore learners in Vocational and Technological College, Shen Yang Normal University. Instruments used in this study cover questionnaire and tests. The purpose of instrument is to investigate the way of learners'vocabulary learning. SPSS (11.0) is used to conduct the related analyzed. The general research findings are that learners quite lack of knowledge about iconicity theory. The correlative study shows the students with different proficiencies share great differences in their cognitive process.Based on the results and research findings, suggestions and implications are provided on how to improve learners'vocabulary abilities in English vocabulary teaching and learning for future research.
