A Study On He Qiutao's Shuo-fang-bei-cheng

Tt was the turning point in Chinese history when the serious social crisis occurred from the later of the 18th century to the early 19th century. The ruling class had been airing to save the crisis, however,cultural tyranny was somewhat eased . Affected by this, the academic community had been gradually active, A group of enlightened scholars converted their attention from the textual research to social issues, the national economy, and people's livelihood as well, advocating the idea of practical utility .Therefore, the re-emergence of the practical utility school marked the formation of the practical utility trend of thought. He Qiutao is one of the most prominent representatives who had a profound understanding of Confucian classics, advocated the research and practice of the idea of practical utility. He was mainly engaged in the history of Northwest Frontier during the Opium War. His monograph, Shuofangbeicheng, contains the essence of the idea of practical utility and spreads the idea facilitating our study on Qing Dynasty history of Sino-Russian relations. It was the first time to describe the historical process of Sino-Russia relations comprehensively and systematicly, provide a large number of research information on Sino-Russian relations in the Qing Dynasty.
