In the last two decades, Chinese oil painting has showed a diversified development tendency. It not only persists the native realist oil painting style, but also absorbs some new styles originated from the development of commodity economy, such as the"cartoon generation"and"gaudy art."In the new era, the artists engage in oil painting in different ways as well as with different notions. There is a great shift in their choice of materials. The way of material collection and analysis reflects the characteristic of the new era.This thesis is divided into three parts, intending to analyze the relationship between the collection and analysis of material and oil painting creation. The first part discusses the material research and stream of thoughts in creation of some Chinese and foreign painters; it also summarizes the process and characteristic of material research of each artist. Then it further explores the influence of politics, religion and contemporary art concept on material research from a macro perspective. Taking the cultural background into consideration, this part analyzes the influence of the cultural tendency of localization, popularization and commercialization on the material choosing of contemporary artists.The second part focuses on my material research and oil painting creation. Through studying the individual case of the my oil painting creation, the specific process of gathering and analyzing materials, and solving all the problems I meet, this part summarizes and compares the different characteristics of traditional and contemporary material research. This part discusses the cultural significance of my"Childhood"oil painting series.The last part is an in-depth analysis into various problems existing in the material research of oil painting teaching in China's institutions of higher learning. It gives suggestions and proposes workable measures. It appeals to the institutions of higher learning to put more emphasis on material research teaching.Material collection and analysis constitute essential parts in oil painting creation. They can decide whether a work of art is successful or not. We should constantly explore new methods, break away from the limitations, and advance with the time, trying to find more and better ways of material research and working for artistic creation.
