Objective To investigate the association of expressions of nm23-H1 and Livin in advanced carcinoma of stomach patients with the clinical pathology, and their relations to clinical outcome of the advanced carcinoma of stomach patients treated with platinum-based chemotherapy, in order to make a forecast for the curative effect. Methods Advanced gastric cancer patients treated with oxaliplatin as first-line chemotherapy regimen were allotted and their pathological sections were immunohistochemically stained with antibody specific to nm23-H1 and Livin. The relationship between the expressions and the pathological characters was analyzed. After they were treated with oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy, the difference between their time to progression(TTP) was used to analyze the relationship between the expressions and the prognosis. Results 1. By the immunohistochemical method, nm23-H1 and Livin expressions were detected in 54.4%(31/57) and 42.1%(24/57) of the pathological sections. The expression of Livin was higher in gastric cancer tissue samples than in adjacent tissue samples(χ2=4.842, P<0.05), and was positively correlated with the cytodifferentiation, the poorly differentiated with more expression. The expression of nm23-H1 was lower in gastric cancer tissue samples than in adjacent tissue samples(χ2=4.609, P<0.05), and was positively correlated with no pathological character. There was no ralationship between the expression of nm23-Hl and Livin(χ2=0.888, P>0.05).2. Log-rank test shows that TTP in patients with expression of nm23-Hl positive was significantly longer than those in patients with expression of nm23-Hl negative(χ2=5.310, P<0.05), and Livin negative significantly longer than Livin positive(χ2=4.348, P<0.05).3. COX multivariate analysis showed that expressions of nm23-Hl positive and Livin negative were associated with longer TTP in advanced carcinoma of stomach patients compared with other factors(P<0.05).Conclusion Expressions of nm23-Hl and Livin correlated with the prognosis of advanced carcinoma of stomach patients treated with platinum-based chemotherapy. It may be helpful to a certain extent for evaluating the prognosis.
