Objective: To summarize the clinical demonstrations, diagnostic and therapeutic effect of infective endocarditis ( I E ) retrospectively . Methods: Clinical data of 104 I E patients ( 68 males , 36 females ) who aged from 3 to 73 years in our hospital were collected from May 1995 to August 2008 concluding 92 primary IE and 12 sencondary IE.The duration of disease was 6 days to 4 months ( averaged 1.3 months ) .In the primary I E ,2 9 patients suffered from congenital heart disease , 6 2 suffered from the pathological changes of valves ,1 suffered from left atrial myoxoma . In the secondary I E , 5 suffered from mitral valve replacement , 3 suffered from aortic valve replacement , 2 suffered from ventricular septal defect repair , 2 suffered from Ben tall operation , Clinical symptoms, signs, preoperative electrocardiogram, sternum, hemoculture results and heart function parameter of 1 0 4 patients were recorded . For 9 2 patients undergoing heart operation , infective tissues and vegetations were debrided radically , intracardiac malformation was corrected , and valve replacement or plasty was performed , 1 0 patients Self-Discharged . There were 70 selective surgeries and 12 emergent ones in the primary I E ; the secondary I E had 10 selective surgeries . High dose of sensitive antibiotics were used all through the treatment in all I E patients . Results: The early-death of 7 0 selective surgeries and 1 2 emergent ones occurred in 3 cases (4.3% ) and 3 cases (25%) respectively. The early-death of secondary I E occurred in 3 cases ( 30 % ) .Follow-up visit lasted for 3-24 month in 8 3 patients with no-recurrence. Postoperative cardiac function (NYHA) evaluation displayed Classâ… in 69 cases , and Classâ…¡in 12 cases . Conclusion: The successful treatment of I E depends on early diagnosis , optimal surgical timing , complete surgical correction , and combination of internal medicine and surgical treatment .
