purposeBy taking syndrome differentiation theory of traditional Chinese medicine as its guidance and historical literature as its basis, this paper investigates the relevancy of inspection indexes of senile primary osteoporosis to traditional Chinese medicine syndrome types through clinical observations in combination with the recognition of modern medicine on senile primary osteoporosis, which finds out the basis for objectification of traditional Chinese medicine syndrome types and lays the foundation for diagnosis and treatment of senile primary osteoporosis, and further provides the basis for early diagnosis, type classification, early intervention, establishment of therapeutic method and selection of prescriptions and administration of senile primary osteoporosis both in traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine.Methodduring the period from June 2008 to December 2009, the authors randomly examined 139 cases of in-patients in the Geriatric Department of Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine with ultrasonic bone density measuring instrument, among them 114 cases are the patients of osteoporosis, by measuring bone hardness, T value of bone hardness, bone density and T value of bone density, they are classified into light, medium and heavy degree according to the degree of senile primary osteoporosis, and according to relevant traditional Chinese medicine syndrome types, the authors investigated the correlation between each syndrome type and degree of senile primary osteoporosis and value of bone densit by ultrasonic examination.Results1. The TCM syndrome type distribution of Senile Primary Osteoporosis is:syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney:23 patients (20.17%); syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney with concurrent blood stasis:51 patients (44.73%); syndrome of deficiency of spleen qi and stomach qi:21 patients (18.43%); syndrome of deficiency of spleen qi and stomach qi with concurrent blood stasis:19 patients (16.67%). Most of the cases are syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney with concurrent blood stasis.2. By comparing degree of senile primary osteoporosis with traditional Chinese medicine syndrome types,**P<0.01 has salient statistic difference, patients of syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney with concurrent blood stasis are dominant in the classification of degrees of senile primary osteoporosis.3. By comparing traditional Chinese syndrome types with bone hardness, T value of bone hardness, bone density and T value of bone density, **P<0.01 has salient statistical difference. Patients of syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney with concurrent blood stasis and syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney have poorer bone hardness; whereas patients of syndrome of deficiency of spleen qi and stomach qi with concurrent blood stasis have slightly good bone hardness.4. By comparing traditional Chinese syndrome types with ostealgia,**P<0.01 has salient statistical difference, and the patients of syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney with concurrent blood stasis have highest proportion of ostealgia.5. By comparing traditional Chinese medicine with associated diseases of osteoporosis: hypertension, coronary heart disease and hyperlipidemia show positive correlation with osteoporosis,*P<0.05,**P<0.01 and**P<0.01 has statistical difference.Conclusions1. Most of the cases are the patients of senile primary osteoporosis and syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney with concurrent blood stasis, accounting for 44.73%. The order arranged according to the number of patients from high to low:syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney with concurrent blood stasis>syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney> syndrome of deficiency of spleen qi and stomach qi>syndrome of deficiency of spleen qi and stomach qi with concurrent blood stasis.2. Among the three groups of light, medium and heavy degree of osteoporosis, syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney with concurrent blood stasis is the syndrome type with most cases of senile primary osteoporosis.3. Traditional Chinese medicine syndrome types are related to bone hardness, T value of bone hardness, bone density and T value of bone density, the patients of syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney with concurrent blood stasis and syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney have poorer bone hardness; whereas patients of syndrome of deficiency of spleen qi and stomach qi and syndrome of deficiency of spleen qi and stomach qi with concurrent blood stasis have slightly good bone hardness; the order arranged from weak to strong:syndrome of deficiency of liver and kidney with concurrent blood stasis
