Objective To explore the safety and effectiveness of collagen membrane in dural repair of rabbits. Methods 32 rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups, n=8. Bone windows were drilled at each side of midline behind coronal suture with diameter 15mm.After exposed,the dura mater of right side was cut off and repaired with collagen membrane, keep the left side as a control. The rabbits of A group were killed 3 days after the operation ,and the rabbits of B group were killed 15 days after the operation, then the rabbits of C group were killed 30 days after the operation, and the rabbits of D group were killed 60 days after the operation. Venous blood of all rabbits were respectively phlebotomised from ear fringe vein before operation and death ,then the blood samples were tested to count White blood cell.The rabbits of each group were sent to detect brain by MRI 2 hours before killed. Brain tissue of both sides were taken immediately after death for pathological examination. Results White blood cell counting has no significant difference between the two time points i.e before operation and death (P>0.05);the side of dural repair(the right side) and control side (the left side) in each group has no significant difference on MRI image; pathological examinations show only repair reactions, meanwhile endothelial cells cover the inner surface of implants 15 days after the operation, and fibroblasts appeared between collagen fibers of artificial meningeal 30 days after the operation, and collagen membrane and dura mater fully integrated 60 days after the operation.Conclusion The collagen membtsrane is a safe and effective artificial patch material.
