Objective To understand the prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and hepatitis B-associated hepatic cirrhosis in Zunyi city and analyze the sex and age distribution of HBV infection and hepatitis B-associated hepatic cirrhosis,to explore the effects of age and sex on the prevalence of HBV infection and hepatitis B-associated hepatic cirrhosis. Methods From January 2007 to December 2009, blood samples of inpatients without liver disease in the affiliated hospital of Zunyi Medical College were collected, Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B virus surface antibody (HBsAb), hepatitis B virus e antigen (HBeAg), hepatitis B virus e antibody (HBeAb), hepatitis B virus core antibody (HBcAb) were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The prevalence of hepatitis B-associated hepatic cirrhosis in Honghuagang District and Huichuan District of Zunyi City during January 2007 to December 2009 was retrospectively investigated. The populations were divided into 8 different age groups in intervals of 10 years. Results Overall positive rate of HBsAg in populations was 12.63%; HBsAg positive rate among men was 17.62%, women HBsAg was 8.23%. There were significant differences in HBV infections of men and women in each age group from 20 to 60 years old (P<0.01), especially in age groups from 20 to 40 years old.778 cases with hepatitis B-associated cirrhosis were diagnosed in Honghuagang District and Huichuan District during January 2007 to December 2009. The total prevalence of hepatitis B-associated cirrhosis was 83.74/1000 thousands. The prevalence was 119.49/1000 thousands in men and 45.80/1000 thousands in women. The ratio of male to female was 2.80. The prevalence of hepatitis B-associated cirrhosis was increased with age, mainly in 40-70 years old. There were significant differences in the hepatitis B-associated cirrhosis prevalence of men and women in each age group above 20 years old, especially in all age groups from 20 to 50 years old. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age, male sex were two independent risk factors for positive rate of HBsAg and prevalence of hepatitis B-associated cirrhosis. Conclusions There were significant differences in the distribution of age and sex in HBV infection and hepatitis B-associated cirrhosis prevalence,Female low than male Obviously in HBV infection and hepatitis B-associated cirrhosis prevalence.
