ObjectivesTo discuss the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of hemangiopericytoma(HPC) in the central nervous system.MethodsOne hundred and six HPC operations in central nervous system performed at our hospital during the recent 10 years were analyzed retrospectively A review of the relevant literatures was done.ResultsHPC was found more commonly in men than in women. The tumor presented most often in the third to fifth decade of life. The average duration of preoperative symptoms was 18 months. Eighty-four patients underwent total excision of the tumor and 22 patients underwent subtotal excision. Seventy-six patients were followed up from 8 months to 10 years (median: 41 months), of which 59 patients underwent external radiotherapy post operation The average survival period was 98 months, with survival rates at 5 years after surgery of 70.6%. The median time before the first recurrence was 42 months, with the recurrence rates at 1,5 years after surgery being 17.9 and 75%, respectively.ConclusionCompleted excision of the tumor was the main treatment of patients with HPC. Post-operative radiotherapy can give a better prognosis.
