Objective:The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the levels of MMP-9 and blood pressure circadian rhythm (dipper, non-dipper, anti-dipper hypertension) in essential hypertension, by detecting the levels of MMP-9 under different rhythm of blood pressure in elderly hypertensive patients. Methods:A study was performed in a population based random sample aged 60-75 (n=80). They were assigned into subgroups:dipper hypertension as a control group of 27 cases, non-dipper hypertension of 27 patients and anti-dipper hypertension group of 26 patients. MMP-9 levels were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Results:(1) The levels of MMP-9 in non-dipper and anti-dipper hypertension group were higher than the dipper hypertension group, the difference was significant (P<0.01,t=3.997,2.798); (2) The levels of MMP-9 between non-dipper and anti-dipper hypertension group have no significant difference (P>0.05); (3) Pearson correlation analysis showed that:in all cases, the MMP-9 with age, average heart rate, systolic blood pressure by chance, diastolic blood pressure by chance and other basic clinical data has no significant correlation (P>0.05); respectively analysis to dipper type, non-dipper and anti-dipper type hypertension group showed that the MMP-9 had negative correlation with the average pulse (P=0.017) in non-dipper hypertension group, and the MMP-9 had positive correlation with LDL-C (P=0.001) in anti-dipper type hypertension group.Conclusions:(1) In elderly patients with EH, MMP-9 levels were associated with abnormal blood pressure circadian rhythm(non-dipper, anti-dipper hypertension); (2) In elderly patients with EH of anti-dipper blood pressure circadian rhythm, MMP-9 levels were associated with LDL-C.
