The natural medicines are widely used in clinic in china because of their abundant resources, wide sources, less toxic effects and antiseptic function. Dental caries is one kind of infectious deceases which could influences dental functions. Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) is the main cariogenic bacteria. The study was to find new anticaries natural medicines by sieving the natural medicines and observing their effects on S.mutans's growth, adherence and acidogenicity in vitro, and to provide experimental evidences and theoretical basis for preventing dental caries with natural medicines. Objective:The purpose of this research was to find new anticaries natural medicines through observing the influences on S.mutans of the natural medicines in vitro. Methods: One-hundred kinds of natural medicines were chosen which were mentioned in literatures that has antiseptic function. The prohibitive effect of S.mutans was observed by OD value of different medicine on different time (before adding S.mutans, after adding S.mutans and 48 hrs after adding S.mutans) obeying the rules of tests on medicine distilling and bacteria. The prohibition of 20 medicines was tested repeatedly. Two medicines with best repeatability were chosen to study the inhibition of acid production and adherence each other in vitro. Results: 1. The difference of OD value was lager than 1.0 before and after 48 hrs'anaerobic culture in positive control group. The difference of OD value was obvious before and after 48 hrs'anaerobic culture in test groups such as Phellodendron, Aristolochia, Chinese Rhubarb, Radix Paeoniae Rubra, Radix Aucklandiae, Herba Artemisiae Capillaris, Purple Perilla, Eucommia Bark, Rhizoma Anemones Altaicae, Fructus Oryzae Germinatus, Angelica Sinensis, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli, Polygonum Cuspidatum, Fructus Kochiae, Radix Sophorae Tonkinensis, Rhizoma Coptidis, Phellodendron, Fructus Xanthil, Radix Astragali, Dittany Bark, Liquorice, Clove, Angelica Dahurica, Radix Puerariae, Plantain and Herba Oldenlandiae .2.There were prohibitive effects on the growth of S.mutans in vitro (P<0.05) when the concentration of Phellodendron, Aristolochia, Chinese Rhubarb, Radix Paeoniae Rubra, Radix Aucklandiae, Herba Artemisiae Capillaris, Purple Perilla, Eucommia Bark was more than 12.50(mg/ml), Rhizoma Anemones Altaicae, Fructus Oryzae Germinatus, Angelica Sinensis, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli, Polygonum Cuspidatum was more than 6.25(mg/ml), Fructus Kochiae, Radix Sophorae Tonkinensis, Rhizoma Coptidis, Phellodendron, Fructus Xanthil, Radix Astragali was more than 3.13(mg/ml), Radix Astragali was more than 1.56(mg/ml).3. Rhizoma Anemones Altaicae and Angelica Sinensis were chosen to observing the inhibition of adherence and acidogenicity in vitro on S.mutans. They could inhibit the adhesive ability and acidogenicity of S.mutans when the concentration of Rhizoma Anemones Altaicae was not less than 0.78mf/ml and the concentration of Angelica Sinensis was not less than 1.56mg/ml.Conclusions: Rhizoma Anemones Altaicae and Angelica Sinensis have inhibitory effects on the adherence and acidogenicity of S.mutans in vitro when the concentration of them were more than 0.78 mg/ml,1.56 mg/ml respectively. They may be emoloyed as new anticaries natural medicines.
