Object:To explore the depression, anxiety symptoms in patients with chronic pain, analysis the impact of different pain characteristics (location, duration and nature) on depression/anxiety in patients with chronic pain, and investigate the relationship between the dimension of chronic pain (affective pain, sensory pain, pain intensity, episode of pain per week) and the depression/anxiety level of patients with chronic pain.Method:156 patients with chronic pain and 89 health control completed a demographics questionnaire, Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), Beck depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). The t test andχ2 test were used to compare the psychological results between chronic pain group and control group. Analysis of Variance was used to compare the full score of BDI and BAI among chronic pain groups with different pain characteristics. Correlation analysis was used to investigate the relationship between depression /anxiety factor scores and sensory pain, affective pain, the intensity of pain(VAS) and the episode of pain per week in patients with chronic pain.Results:①The full score and subscale scores of BDI and BAI in chronic pain group were statistically higher than the normal control group (P<0.01). The full score and subscale scores of BDI and BAI in male/female patients were statistically higher than the male/female health control, while there were no significant differences between the depression/anxiety scores of male and female patients.②There was significant difference.among the depression/anxiety scores of patient groups with different locations of pain (P<0.05), and the low back pain group showed the highest depression/anxiety level. There was significant difference among the depression/anxiety scores of patient groups with different duration of pain (P<0.05), and the depression/anxiety scores were increased with the extendibility of pain duration of pain. There was no significant difference among the depression/anxiety scores of patient groups with different nature of pain. However, the high intensity group of Sting pain showed higher depression/anxiety level than the low intensity group, while the high intensity group of hot burning pain and tenderness pain showed higher depression level than the low intensity group.③There were significantly positive correlation between sensory pain/affective pain/the intensity of pain (VAS) and each factor scores of BDI and BAI, except the sensory pain and the emotion factor score of BDI. There were no significantly correlation between the episode of pain per week and any factor score of BDI and BAI.Conclusions:Patients with chronic pain associated with significant depression and anxiety symptoms. Moreover, the scores of each dimension of chronic pain were significantly correlated with the factor scores of BDI and BAI. There were significant difference between the full scores of BDI and BAI in patients with different symptom characteristics of pain (location, duration and nature). Therefore, establishing combination treatments according to the symptom characteristics of pain is urged for the treatment of chronic pain.
