ObjectiveTo study effect of X-irradiation on the necrotic volume and the anterior horn cells of the injured spinal cord of beagles.MethodThe Beagle model of spinal cord contusion was made by the Allen technique. Following the contusion, the spinal cord injury sites of radiotherapy group received a single dose of 10Gy of X-irradiation at day 1,3,7,14,28 after the spinal cord injury. Tarlov`s scale was performed at day 3,7,14,28,56 between both spinal cord injury group and radiotherapy group. All the beagles were sacrificed after 56 days. Observe the effect of X-irradiation on necrotic volume of the spinal cord by HE staining and anterior horn cells of the spinal cord by Nissl staining.ResultsThere was statistically significant difference between radiotherapy group and spinal cord injury group in Tarlov`s scale. The necrotic volume of the spinal cord injury site in the radiotherapy group was notably reduced by 57.95% compared with that of SCI group. (p<0.05). The quantity of anterior horn cells in the radiotherapy group increased more 22.70% relative to those in SCI groupConclusionX-irradiation can reduced the necrosis volume and attenuate the loss of anterior horn cells to improve motor function and tissue structure.
