Objective To investigate the epidemic characteristics of hip fracture in the aged in Ningxia in order to set a theoretical basis for its preventing. And investigate the preventing and dealing methods of the preoperative concomitance and complications in the duration of hospital because of osteoporotic hip fracture in the old of or more than 60 years old. Methods To collected 608 old hospitalized patients with hip fracture from January 2003 to December 2008 to study the following aspects: 1) the age of onset; 2) the mechanisms of its happening; 3) the relationship between hip fracture and season; and 4) the epidemic trend of its happening.5) the preoperative concomitance 6) surgery style 7) complication 8) the change of the duration of hospital. All data was analyzed using SPSS11.5 software. Results In all patients that we have investigated, about 94.7% of them suffered from hip fracture because of falling down. The ratio of cases in male vs female is 0.97:1. The ratio of femoral neck fracture vs intertrochanteric fracture is 1.13:1.The type of fracture: Gargen III and IV patients were main in femoral neck fracture groups. In intertrochanteric fracture groups, Evan's Ib and Ic were main. The highly risky age of old female and male who suffered from femural neck fracture ranged from 65 to 74 and 70 to 79, respectively. But in intertrochanteric fracture, there is no significant difference between female and male, the highly risky age both ranged from 70 to 79. There is no relationship between hip fracture and seasons. The number of old patients with hip fracture increased at a rate of 20% per year in recent six years, which changed a little but not significant with the type of fracture and gender. Patients with preoperative concomitance took about 70.5%, most of which had angiocardopathy and diabetes. Those patients who need operation took about 75% and those who had complications after operation took about 5.1%,and the results of multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that what affects the postoperative complications are age,the preoperative concomitance and the type of anesthesia. But the average duration of hospitalization did not change significantly in recent 6 years. Conclusion The number of old patients with hip fracture increase with a obvious trend, so hip fracture should be regarded seriously in both male and female. The age focused on the range from 65 to 79. Season has no relationship with the incidence of hip fracture in Ningxia. Treatment to the preoperative concomitance and suitable anesthetic and surgery style for old patients with osteoporotic hip fracture should be applied in the preoperative period in order to prevent complications after operation and increase the patient survival rate. All of these have a lot of clinical means.
