Objective:To investigate the expression of S100A4 and vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) in gastric carcinoma and to study the correlation between clinicopathological features, prognosis and S100A4 and VEGF-C.Methods:S100A4 and VEGF-C protein were measured in 108 gastric carcinoma specimens and 20 specimens in adjacent carcinoma tissue by immunohistochemistry. Correlations between the expression of S100A4, VEGF-C and patient age, gender, the size of carcinoma, pathological differentiation, invasion depth, TNM stage and prognosis were evaluated. Results:Expression of S100A4 and VEGF-C in gastric carcinoma was significantly higher than that in adjacent carcinoma tissues (P<0.05). Expression of S100A4 was associated with the size of carcinoma and lymph nodes metastasis (P<0.05), and expression of VEGF-C was associated with lymph node metastasis and clinical TNM stage (P<0.05). It is positive of the correlation between S100A4 and VEGF-C (P< 0.05) in carcinoma tissues. Five-year survival rate of carcinoma patients with positive expression of S100A4 and VEGF-C is lower than that of negative cases respectively, but statistical significance is negative. Conclusions:Expression of S100A4 and VEGF-C is associated wtih lymph nodes metastasis. Expression of VEGF-C is associated with the pathway of lymphangiogenesis and may play the important role of nodes metastasis in gastric carcinoma.
