Objective:To investigate the prevalence of wedge-shaped defect and chewing betel nut among residents over 15 years old in Hunan Province in order to understand the distribution of wedge-shaped defect and its relationship with chewing betel nut. Methods:In accordance with the standard of the third national oral health epidemiological investigation, the subjects were selected in five regions of Hunan Province through random cluster sampling procedure. The correlative factors of wedge-shaped defect and chewing betel nut were explored by questionnaire survey. The occurrence of wedge-shaped defect in the residents was observed by oral examination. Results:In the oral health investigation of 2123 residents in Hunan Province, the overall incidence of wedge-shaped defect was 36.1%. The incidence of males (38.5%) was higher than that of females (33.6%) with statistically differences (P<0.05). Compared with the different ages, the prevalence of wedge-shaped defect was increased with age statistically (P<0.05). The incidence of wedge-shaped defect was 45.7%in residents with primary education,34.3% in residents with secondary education and 31.6% in residents with university education. Compared the former with the latter two, there were significantly differences (P<0.05), however no significant differences were found between the latter two (P>0.05). In total, the rate of people who had the habits of chewing betel nut was 14.8%. The incidence of wedge-shaped defect in betel nut chewing group (31.6%) was not statistically different with that in non-betel nut chewing group (36.9%)(P>0.05).Conclusion:The overall incidence of wedge-shaped defect is 36.1% among Hunan residents. Wedge-shaped defect is associated with sex, age and educational level. Those who are male, elder or low-educated seem easier to suffer from wedge-shaped defect. The habit of chewing betel nut may not influence wedge-shaped defect obviously.
