Objective: to retrospectively evaluate the curative effect and to investigate the potential prognostic factors in patients with surgically resectived brain metastases.Methods:80 patients of brain metastases presented during 2006 and 2010 and treated by operationgs were undertaken follow-up by means of telephone. Finally 52 patients were got unbroken data. The corresponding database was set up by the software of excel.SPSS 16.0 Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate the rates of survival and draw the survival curve.10 factors were analysed by the methods of Cox regression analysis, which including gender, age,Karnofsky Performance Scale(KPS),position of the tumors, numbers and bulk of the tumors, control of primary tumor and treatment of radiotherapy(R) or chemotherapy(C) or not postoperation. Results:Overall median survival was 14 months, with 6-month, 1-year, 2-year survival percentages of 80%,59.6%,19.2% respectively .Median survival of S(surgical operation only),S+R,S+C,S+R+C,was 6, 15, 10, 20 months respectively.Survival was statistically significantly different between S+R+C group and simple surgical operation group(P<0.05).Conclutions:The prognosis of the brain metastases was poor. The optimal treatment of brain metastases is combination treatment of S+R+C group with the longest median survival of 20 months.Cox regression analysis showed that numbers of tumors, diameter >6cm,primary tumor status and present distant metastases or not were independent prognostic factors of postoperation of brain metastases. The age of <55 maybe have a better prognosis than age of >55.Whereas there was no evidence showed that KPS,gender, site of the tumor was related to the patients life span.
