Primary liver cancer is the most prevalent malignancies, it's treatment and poor prognostic are always the concerned focus and puzzle.Because of the unnoticeable onset and progression of the disease, a great number of patients presents with advanced cancer or severe cirrhosis who are not surgical candidates. The use of Liver transplantation is limited by donor availability and daunting expense. While certain breakthrough has been achieved in the field of biotherapy research, the majority of the achievements has been used to palliate the symptoms and many of them are undergoing clinical trial. While the requirements of the conditions of patients for radiological and chemical therapy are demanding and the effect is not so definite and significant, the localized therapy shed a light for the patients with liver cancer. This therapy has been becoming an area of great concern, since it is minimally invasive, with definite effect and simple manipulation and few complications, it also could be performed repeatedly and is indicative for many diseases. However, for the advanced cancer, the effect of localized therapy is not so satisfying. Any therapy are subject to limitation and the comprehensive treatment is advocated for the liver cancer. How to choose favorable comprehensive therapeutic regimen is being the main concern of the treatment of liver cancer. With the huge technical advances having been made in the field of RFA and TACE, these two therapies become prevalent than other local therapies. The combination of the two therapies will not only maximize the advantages and minimize the disadvantages, but also enhance the respective effect, extremely the quality of life of patients and long-term survival rate, the treating effect rivals the surgical resection. Objective: to examine the effect of the TACE combined with RFA in treating primary liver cancer. Methods: choose 53 patients having primary liver cancer with lesion of 3-5cm, for these patients, 29 patients(31 niduses) underwent TACE combined with RFA(as treatment group) while 24 patients(25 niduses) underwent RFA solely (as control group). After 1 mouth, 3 mouths and 6 mouths, to assess the effect of the treatment of the two group by imaging technique which detect the blood supply or enhancement of the lesions and the diminishing of lesions. After one month, the change of AFP is compared between pre-treatment and post-treatment in two groups; Observation the change of liver function in postoperative patients. Results: all patients were examined by enhanced CT scan or B-ultrasound to detect the enhancement and blood supply of the lesions. After 1 month and 3 months, two groups of niduses with treatment review: no enhance or ultrasound blood flow signals; after 6 months, recurrent lesions are 4 in treatment group, and 9 in control group. the relapse rate was 12.9﹪(4/31) in treatment group, and 36﹪(9/25) in control group. The statistically difference was noted (χ~2=4.147, P<0.05); In two groups there was significant reduce in serum AFP between pre- and post-treatment. The transaminase of 19 patients was raised after treatment, and it was normal in 5~12 days by treating. Conclusion: the effect of TACE combined with RFA is superior than solely RFA.
