Objective The purpose of this paper is to explore the actual level of mental health of polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS). Next investigate the relationship of pathogenesis and emotional factors for the women suffering from PCOS, with a view to supplement the causes of PCOS, using the model of "psychological stress-liver stagnation" to provide the basis for effective measures of prevention and control, and to guide the clinical application. Methods The research carried out according to the case control study. The research targets were:the PCOS group, the normal group. According to the design of the research thesis, all research targets were required to fill out Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),and Life Events Scale(LES). All the date were counted and entered into the computer.A database was established to analyze data by SPSS16.0. Results1. In case of the scores of the depression and anxiety, there was an significant difference between the PCOS group and the normal group, P<0.001;With the prolonging of duration and increasing age of PCOS, the scores of the depression and anxiety increased in varying degrees.2. In the category of "Negative Life Events", there was significant difference between the PCOS group and the normal group, P<0.001-the PCOS group has more negative life events stimulation than the normal group. In the category of "Total Life Events", there is an obvious difference between the PCOS group and the normal group, P<0.001-the PCOS group has more total life events stimulation than the normal group.3. The mental status of depression and anxiety and the negative life event were the risk factors of PCOS. 4. Each type of PCOS TCM syndrome, the syndrome of Liver-stagnation (37.5%)and phlegmy wet type (36.4%)had the biggest proportion, then is kidney empty type(19.8%), blood stasis type is less.5. Within the type of Liver-stagnation and other PCOS TCM syndromes, there were significant differences of the scores of depression and anxiety, P <0.05 or 0.01; In the category of "Negative Life Events" and "Total Life Events", the type of Liver-stagnation PCOS women are significantly higher than other three TCM syndromes.6. The syndrome of Liver-stagnation was positively and close relevant with the negative life events(OR=5.693).Conclusions1. It is suggested that the mental status of PCOS women should be worse markedly than that of normal women. Depression and anxiety may be the frequent mental reactions of PCOS women.2. Social life events, expecially the negative life events, may have the important influence on the PCOS women as emotional stressor. It's predicted that this could be an important triggering factor leading to PCOS.3. The mental status of depression and anxiety and the negative life event are the risk factors of PCOS.4. Each type of PCOS TCM syndrome, the syndrome of Liver-stagnation and phlegmy wet type have the biggest proportion. Liver-stagnation was one of the important pathogenesis of PCOS. The syndrome of Liver-stagnation is positively and close relevant with the negative life events, we can use the model of "psychological stress-liver stagnation" to provide the basis for effective measures of prevention and control.5. Emotional factors and PCOS may exist side-by-side, the relation of cause and effect of both will be under more explore. So the treatment of PCOS should be emphasized on psychological therapy in clinical diagnosis and treatment and the ways of smoothing emotion should be used in TCM.
