ObjectiveTo observe and study the clinical effectiveness and the functional mechanism of electro-acupuncture to hemiplegia after stroke. The collected clinical data will act as the basis in supporting the effectiveness of the electro-acupuncture therapy.MethodsDivide 60 patients with hemiplegia after stroke randomly into 2 groups. The treatment group adopted electro-acupuncture while the control group adopted drinking Chinese herbs. Each group consisted of 30 patients. The treatment group was treated with electro-acupuncture therapy once daily, while the Chinese herbs group was treated with one dose of Chinese medicine everyday. Both groups were treated 20 days. Efficacy evaluation was conducted after the treatment period of 20 days. Progress of patients was observed according to the criteria set in (1) Diagnosis and Criterion of therapeutic effect for stroke 1996. (2) Barthel Index (BI) activity of daily living scale (ADL) (3) Neuronal damage access for neuronal function of clinical stroke patients. The data were recorded independently before treatment and after treatment. Assessment was carried out separately after the clinical experiment, and information were gathered, summarized and analyzed statistically.ResultsIn research and comparison on hemiplegia after stroke treated by electro-acupuncture and Chinese herbs, the total effective rate of the treatment group was 96.7%, while the control group was only 83.3%. Both groups were statistical significance (P<0.05). According to the degree of improvement in clinical symptoms, the treatment group was markedly superior than the control group (P<0.05). For improving the ability of daily life, the treatment group was even more significant than the control group (P<0.01). Both groups were effective in improving neuronal damage symptoms of patients (P<0.01), while treatment group was more significant (P<0.05).ConclusionsThe using of electro-acupuncture therapy can improve clinical symptoms and signs of patients effectively, strengthening the quality and ability of daily life, and is one of the effective therapy in the treatment of hemiplegia after Stroke.
