Objective:This prospective randomized trial is to investigate the necessary of antibiotic prophylactic usage after PLC interventional procedures.Materials and methods:94Patients (101vascular intervention procedures) without pre-procedure infection were divided into two groups randomly. The standard for including and excluding patients were defined before procedures. The patients with HCC (confirmed by pathology or diagnosed by radiology and laboratory examination) were included. The patients were excluded who suffered tumor rupture, infection or had the risk for infection, received antibiotic treatment in one week or adrenal cortex hormone or immunosuppressant before the procedures, were with type II bile duct abnormality. The patients chose were divided into two groups randomly. The patients in group A received Prophylactic antibiotic (cefuroxime) with a dose of 2.25g bid after procedures, while the patients in group B received no antibiotic. The temperature, WBC count and patients'physical sign were observed and followed up for one month. Hemoculture was performed when the patient had the sign of infection. Infection rates in two groups were compared.Result:fever occurred in 21procedures,15 cases in group A,6 cases in group B, Elevated WBC count(>10000/ul) was found in 2 procedures,1 in group A and 1 in group B. the infection rates were 1.8% in group A and2.2% in group B. There are no significant difference in the infection rates between the two groups(P>0.005).Conclusion:Prophylactic antibiotic is not necessary after interventional procedures for HCC.
