ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to investigate the therapy and crown of molars with furcation involvement after separating roots and prosthesis.Materials and methodsWe chose 42 patients treated with crown or post crown from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University. The 19 patients were treated with root separation and the other 23 were not treated with root separation. Then evaluate the clinical effect from seven affects (crown or post crrown loss, fracture rate of post-core or root fracture, movability, gingival inflammation, periodontal pocket depth, alveolar bone absorption or regeneration, recurrent periapical periodontitis) of these teeth after one to two years of follow up. All the prosthesis in this study were manufactured from Hangzhou Wanmei Dental Co.Ltd. Root bisection and prosthesis are all done by dental therapists. Glass inomer cement was GC Fuji I.Statistical analysis was carried out by the SPSS software package(SPSS,15.0 for Windows).ResultThere was no statistical significance (P> 0.05) of the rate of falling off crown or post crown between root separation (1) and routine(1). There was significant difference (P<0.05) of tooth mobility between root separation (1) and routine(13). There was significant difference (P<0.05) of recurrent periodontitis between root separation (1) and routine(9). There was significant difference (P<0.05) of periodontal pocket depth between root separation (1) and routine(10). There was significant difference (P<0.05) of alveolar bone absorption between root separation (1) and routine(9). These two groups all didn't have recurrent periapical periodontitis.ConclusionThe application of crown prosthesis after separating roots is an efficient method to decrease the rate of recurrent periodontitis, tooth mobility, periodontal pocket depth and alveolar bone absorption. But these two groups had no significant difference in controlling periapical periodontitis and falling off crown or post crown. We should pay attention to the choice of indications and do well in each treatment procedures. Overall, the crown prosthesis after separating roots can help patients to retain teeth and restore the chewing function. It is worth promoting in the clinic.
