Objectives: To describe the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in rural areas of Wangcheng. To analyze the risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus and the interaction between them, and to provide scientific evidences for behavioral intervention on high-risk groups of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: We randomly selected 2 townships from Wangcheng by a multi-staged cluster samplin, and then three villages were selected from the selected townships. We interviewed the people aged 15 years old and above by a self-designed questionnaire including demographics, chronic diseases history, diabetes family history, living habits, eating habits, etc. and measured physiological indexes such as height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, blood pressure, blood sugar, etc. Results: 1602 persons were investigated in the study. The prevalence of diabetes among rural residents in Wangcheng is 7.24%. The age-adjusted prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus was 5.35% (95% CI: 4.25% -6.45%), the prevalence of man was 4.03% (95% CI:3.06%-4.99%), the prevalence of woman was 6.23% (95% CI:5.05%-7.41% ). The independent risk factors of diabetes in logistic regression were family history(OR=3.570,95% CI:1.835-6.944), more than 45 years old (OR=3.626, OR95% CI:1.385-9.488), high fat diet(OR=1.983,95% CI:1.127-3.489), central obesity(OR=2.379,95% CI:1.244-4.563). Additive interaction were detected between family history and age≥45 (RERI=6.299, RERI95% CI:2.514-10.085), family history and central obesity (RERI=7.180, RERI95% CI:2.490-11.870), family history and fatty diet (RERI=3.020,RERI95% CI:1.020-5.020), central obesity and fatty diet (RERI=6.642,RERI95% CI:2.229-11.056). Conclusions: The prevalence of diabetes among rural residents in Wangcheng is 7.24%. The independent risk factors of diabetes are family history, more than 45 years old, high fat diet, central obesity. Additive interaction has been detected between family history and age>45, family history and central obesity, family history and fatty diet, central obesity and fatty diet. We should take effective interventions on high risk groups of diabetes, and give health education and regular screening for people with family history of diabetes, and develop healthy diet and control central obesity in order to prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus.
