Objective:To compare the dental and the skeletal tissue profile changes in the anterior open bite cases treated with the microscrew anchorage system(MAS) and multiloop edgewise archwire(MEAW), and to investigate the different mechanism and treatment planning of two methods in correcting anterior open bite.Method:Forty-six adult anterior open bites, whose age ranging from 18 to 32 years old were divided into two groups according to degree of open bite, twenty-two cases were treated by microscrew anchorage system and twenty-four cases were treated by multiloop edgewise archwire. Independent samples test of the value of open bite before treatment between two groups were performed(p=1.55), the difference between two groups was not significant. X-ray cephalometrics of the lateral head films before and after treatment were measured and analyzed. Paired and independent samples T-test were performed to evaluate the treatment changes between different methods.Results:In the implant group, as results of molar intrusion, the mandible rotated counterclockwise, in addition, lower and total facial height was reduced. There were significant differences in the treatment results between two methods. In the MEAW group, the upper and lower incisors were extruded and the upper incisors were retracted, the upper and lower molars were uprighted.Conclusions::Two methods could correct anterior open bite effectively, but the mechanism and clinical indication was different. To treat high angle and mild-to-moderate skeletal open bite cases, microscrew anchorage has a lot of advantages. Multiloop edgewise archwire was more suitable to the dental and mild skeletal open bite treatment. After the total, posterior teeth vertical control is crucial to the success of the correction. Microscrew has a lot of advantages, for example, flexible parts and simple operation, low cost, small volume, instant surgical strength, et al. Orthodontic doctor can undertake implanted surgery by himself, and it's more advantageous to the popularization and application of this technology.
