Calligraphy and Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) are the quintessence's of Chinese culture. They are closely connected. This paper stands the angle of the development of academic discipline, and uses the method of comparative research to analyses the development similarities of Calligraphy and TCM. Further more, this paper discusses the Significance of modern calligraphy for modern TCM.This paper contents 4 parts. The first part is started with the meaning of culture, the culture of TCM, and calligraphy. The author tries to bring the research of the relationship of calligraphy and TCM into the research of the culture of TCM, and lays more emphasis to discuss the research area of the culture of TCM and the definitions of calligraphy.The clue of the second part is set as historic development. The method of cooperation is used to analyses the development of calligraphy and TCM from early Qin dynasty to the Republic of China. The similarities of calligraphy and TCM in history development are fully proved. To be specific, the born of calligraphy and TCM which were both in early Qin dynasty were from the wise man or witchcraft. In the end of Han dynasty and Wei-Jin dynasty, both of them developed into separated disciplines. In Tang-Song dynasty, the leaders paid their attentions to both calligraphy and TCM, which sped up the development effectively. Then in Song-Yuan dynasty, the benign situation of the contention of one hundred schools of thought appears for calligraphy and TCM. In Ming-Qing dynasty, calligraphy and TCM adhered to the principle that not to stickle to the ancient and not to promote without the tenet, which Injected infinite energy to both of them. In Late Qing and Early Republic of China, calligraphy and TCM nearly exterminated, by suffering from a destined calamity, and thanks for the effort by millions of people with lofty ideals, calligraphy and TCM could have a rebirth.The third part analyses the present development situation of calligraphy and TCM in six sides, which include Western culture, Modernizing, Academism, the folk group, the strikes in the rubbings from stone inscriptions, and the arguments in cold and warm schools. This part also concludes the available experience for modern development of TCM. In the attitude of treating the western culture, misunderstanding of both of them. Upon regarding the western culture, there exists a wrong point that both use the western culture to explain, to prove themselves. In the modernizing process, the problem that losing the tradition all existed. The ideal Geek calligraphy idea is positive and can be used, and the folk group, their historical achievements and their thoughts, experience, ways to educate are also can be followed, the experience that how the calligraphy was published also can be followed by Chinese traditional medical science. In calligraphy we suggest stele combine with the article, in Chinese traditional medical science we also suggest to unify the cold and the warm. In the attitude of treating the western culture, both of them have the misunderstanding of proving their points by western culture blindly. In their course to modernization, both of them have the problem of lose the tradition. The concept of the idealized Academism is advisable, and the Historic Contribution, concept and the education methods are well worth exploring. The popularization of calligraphy is worthy of learning. We promote the combination with stone tablet and copybook, as well as the the unity with cold and warm schools.In the fourth part, this paper discusses the practicability for the research of relationship of calligraphy and TCM and the present situation of this research. A conclusion that the research has effect to flourish the culture of TCM, and also makes sense to promote the development of the modern TCM.
