Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is one of the chronic complications of type 2 diabetes, affecting over half of the diabetic. Clinical manifestations of diabetic neuropathy vary, but can include:numbness, formication, intense pain, peripheral-type sensory disturbance (glove-type or sock-type), or in severe cases lower limb infections, ulcers and even amputation, which would seriously affect the health of diabetic patients and their quality of life.According to Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) studies, strict control of blood glucose can reduce the incidence of neuropathy by 60%, and can slow down its rate of progress by 57%. In 1979 the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended acupuncture to the world to cure 43 kinds of clinical disease, and indications of acupuncture clinical trials are divided into four categories, including type 2 diabetes in the second category of acupuncture indications.ObjectiveTo observe the clinical result of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment on diabetic peripheral neuropathy.Research MethodsIn this study,60 patients with diabetic neuropathy were treated with acupuncture on their Lung Meridian, Spleen Meridian, Kidney Meridian, shu points and yuan points. Clinical symptoms and blood chemistry were observed. The before-and-after results are observed and compared between the acupuncture and moxibustion group in order to assess the effectiveness of using acupuncture as a treatment of diabetic neuropathy. Research Results Comparing the results of the two groups, symptoms in the acupuncture group were improved notably. Fasting blood glucose had deceased(P<0.05) while achieved in the acupuncture group. ConclusionBoth acupuncture and moxibustion of three yuan points and three shu points are standard treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy, however acupuncture is more effective.
