Objectives:To study the sleep spindle (SS) characteristics during Stage 2 (S2)sleep in chronic psychophysiological insomniacs (CPI) and normal controls (NC), and to explore the sleep-protective function and possible action and significance in insomnia of SS.Methods:14 patients with chronic psychophysiological insomnia and 11 normal controls were detected and enrolled in the study through strict structural clinical interview, using the diagnostic criteria for psychophysiological insomnia of International Classification Of Sleep Disorders, Second edition (ICSD-2). Then all the subjects were investigated by questionnaires including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI), Glasgow Sleep Effort Scale(GSES), Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep(DBAS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI), Beck Depression Inventory(revised edition)(BDI-R),and taken polysomnographic recordings that lasted for two consecutive nights to analyze the number and density of SS during S2 sleep. The SPSS16.0 analysis software was used to build up a data base and do the statistics. Results:The results showed that 1,The number (116.79±34.95 v.s.106.36±36.06, p>0.05) and density (0.57±0.20 v.s.0.44±0.12, p>0.05) of SS between CPI group and NC group were not found significant difference.2,The number and density of SS were not found significant difference between male and female in CPI group and NC group.3,Compared with NC group the scores of PSQI,GSES,DBAS,STAI,BDI-R in CPI group were significant difference(p<0.05).Conclusions:The number and density of SS between CPI group and NC group were not found significant difference. These results suggest that maybe there is no deficiency in the sleep-protection mechanism of psychophysiological insomniacs in Chinese population.
