Severe brain injury may result in lifelong neurologic deficits that can have a significant impact on a person's quality of life. Nutrition support is critical to ensuring the best outcome for affected patients. The metabolic responses to the tertiary injury may be intense and prolonged, which cause all sorts of ways of protein catabolism acceleration, high urea nitrogen, negative nitrogen balance, weight loss and decreasing of immunity. All above are easy to cause infection occurrence and development, thus mortality and disable rate of severe brain injuries increase. Early nutritional support contrlbutes greatly to improving metabolic status, increasing immunofunction, decreasing complications, promoting neurological functions and reducing the mortality and morbidity of severe head injury. This article by the way of reviewing the existing domestic and foreign relevant reports and forward-looking experimental studies, overviews the pathophysiological mechanism, and neuroendocrine changing, changing of energy metabolism, nutrition needs, nutrition treatment management and monitoring of those patients with severe brain injury, so as to guide clinical nutrition treatment, and try to improve the prognosis of patients with severe brain injury and improve the quality of life.
