Objective:To investigate the relationship between soluble receptor of advanced glycation end product and carotid atherosclerosis in patients under hemodialysis.Method:76 hemodialysis patients and 35 healthy control individuals matched for age and gender were enrolled in this study. The levels of soluble receptor of advanced glycation end product(sRAGE) were measured, and ultrasonographic studies on carotid arteries were performed. The results of ultrasonography, the levels of sRAGE and the other clinical data were analyzed.Results:①The hemodialysis patients with history of diabetes mellitus or coronary artery disease showed lower level of sRAGE compared with those with no history of diabetes mellitus or coronary artery disease (P<0.05).②The values of intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid for the respective quartiles of sRAGE were 0.9±0.15mm (P<0.05,compared with the other quartiles of IMT),0.8±0.11mm,0.82±0.11mm, 0.76±0.11mm.③Multiple factor linear regression analysis revealed that sRAGE was independently and inversely associated with IMT in patients under hemodialysis (p=-0.25,P=0.017)Conclutions:Soluble receptor of advanced glycation end product independently and inversely correlated with carotid atherosclerosis in patients under hemodialysis, suggesting that high sRAGE may act as a vasculoprotective factor in this population.
