Object:To explore the effect of exercise on pancreatic islet morphology andβ-cell function in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.Method: Fourteen of diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin (STZ, 55mg/kg) were randomly divided into exercise group and control group. Eleven of diabetic rats were survival to the ending of experiments, which were distributed respectively in diabetic exercise group (n=6) and diabetic control group (n=5). Twelve SD rats with euglycemia were randomly divided to normal control group (n=6) and normal exercise group (n=6). The exercise rats were forced to swim with 60 min/d for 8 weeks. At the end of the experiment, fasting blood glucose and insulin in serum and pancreatic tissues were determined by RIA. The morphology of pancreatic islet was evaluated by Image-Pro Plus 6.0.Result: After an 8-week study, blood glucose levels trended to decrease in diabetic exercise group (p=0.053). The levels of insulin in serum and pancreatic tissues in diabetic exercise group were significantly higher than that in diabetic control group (p<0.05) and lower than normal exercise group (p<0.05). The levels of insulin in serum and pancreatic tissues were significantly higher in normal exercise group than that in normal control group (p<0.05). The morphology of pancreatic islet showed that the size and the number of islets significantly increased (p<0.05) and Shape Factor (SF) decreased(p<0.05)in diabetic exercise group compared with diabetic control group. Conclusion: Regular exercise training can improve levels of insulin in serum and pancreatic tissues and recover pancreatic islet morphology, suggesting that exercise training may partly enhanceβ-cell function.
