Purpose We recruit volunteers and stuffs in the community in order to adapt to changes in medical model , and settling the short of dentists which result in the difficult of oral health education. They will take the place of dentists to educate the residents correspondly after systematically training in oral health knowledge. Then evaluate the effectiveness of community-based oral health education project and explore an effective oral health education model for such areas.Methods 1. Choosing the Wulidun community of Hefei municipality as the experiment community. We recruit volunteers in the community. The non-professionals and volunteers will master systematically oral health knowledge by vocational training. Which contains maintenance of series oral health lecture, distribute professional reading materials, group discussion with the guiding of dentists. They will take the place of dentists to educate the residents correspondly,regularly and repeatedly after qualified appraisal in the correctness of professional knowledge.2. Before and after the intervention questionnaire surveys were conducted which Self-designed with the purpose of this survey and based on the Third National Oral Health Survey Questionnaire. The questionnaire included Oral health knowledge, attitudes and behavior. Using one to one asked in conducting the inquiry, the questionnaire truthfully filled out by the investigators according to respondents'answer, checked back after the scene. All statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS 15 statistical package. Differences between groups were compared using Chi-square test and T test.Results 523 and 491 residents had been investigated before and after the intervention. The residents had no statistic difference in age and gender ( P>0.05) in each group. After intervention,the oral health knowledge awareness rate ,the manner and behavior of residents were improved significantly(P<0.01),excepting the length of toothbrushing(P>0.05).After the intervention, women'scores of oral health knowledge, attitude and behavior was superior than men'. The diffrent situation between this survey in the community after the intervention and the third national oral epidemiological survey: the ways to obtain oral health knowledge are main from friends among the community(43%); the attendance rate in toothache and bleeding gums in community groups is far higher than the national urban population; the proportion of poor Self-evaluation of oral conditions is less than the national urban population; the proportion of Self-awareness of more than 20 teeth is much higher than the national urban population.Conclusion Community residents were educationed targetly in oral health by non-professionals and community volunteers,who were training systemly in professional knowledge. This model of community-based oral health education could improve the oral health knowledge awareness rete,the manner and behavior of residents obviously. Effectively solution to the shortage of professional dental which lead to the difficulte of extensive implementation in community oral health education. It's properly to wide using this oral health education model in such areas.
